Two key WeGoCoop milestones to strengthen governance and support Wetland Contracts across the Mediterranean.
Within the framework of the WeGoCoop project, we are pleased to announce two major achievements that mark an important step forward for Wetland Contracts in the Mediterranean region. First, project partners have formally established the Mediterranean Wetland Contracts Community of Practice (CoP) through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
The MoU defines the foundations and operational framework of the CoP, outlining:
-
Scope (Why?): the purpose and objectives of the CoP, highlighting its role in promoting Wetland Contracts across the Mediterranean.
-
Involvement (Who?): the types of organizations, institutions, and individuals who can participate.
-
Functioning (How?): governance, decision-making, and operational arrangements.
-
Initiatives (What?): the main activities, collaborations, and knowledge-sharing initiatives planned.
-
Duration (When?): the timeframe for the CoP’s activities and review mechanisms.
The MoU is available for consultation here.
After reviewing its contents, any organization, institution, or individual interested in Wetland Contracts is welcome to join the CoP by completing the online membership form here.
In parallel, the project has released the Policy Paper on Wetland Contracts in the Mediterranean, specifically designed for policy makers at EU and MENA regional levels, who play a key role in integrated wetland management. The policy paper aims to foster the recognition of Wetland Contracts and encourage commitment to support their implementation throughout the Mediterranean. It provides evidence-based recommendations and practical guidance for enhancing the role of these tools in sustainable wetland governance. The paper focuses on two main areas.
1) Recognition of Wetland Contracts as tools for:
-
Engagement of relevant stakeholders for community-led wetland management.
-
Development of place-based strategies for integrated wetland management.
-
Identification of win-win solutions for sustainable wetland management.
-
Enhancement of financial capacity for effective wetland management.
2) Commitment to support Wetland Contracts through:
-
Improved and mainstreamed recognition in relevant policies and strategies.
-
Harmonization of methodological approaches.
-
Fostering networking and dissemination.
-
Mobilization of financial resources.
This policy paper serves as a strategic reference for decision-makers seeking to strengthen wetland governance, stakeholder engagement, and sustainable management practices across the Mediterranean region.

Through these two milestones, WeGoCoop aims to strengthen collaboration, facilitate knowledge exchange, and support the continued promotion and implementation of Wetland Contracts throughout the Mediterranean region.
